Where can we find Hope? What makes Life Worth living?
It has been said that ‘no one is immune from life’s difficulties’. Scott Peck said in The Road Less Traveled that ‘Life is Difficult.” Many clients find themselves having a hard time and wondering what they can do about their relational, emotional, and situational pain. They often find life very disheartening, discouraging, and stressful. They wonder what to do. Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? What can change?
Therapy can be an option to help one make a change. It can do so in several ways. For instance, it can offer clients different perspectives on how to view their situation. It can help clients untangle and sort out the confusion they may be facing. Therapy can help clients find meaning in their difficulty. It can help a client access some unknown strengths that can help one deal with hardships and overcome obstacles. Therapy can help them find hope that is realistic, possible, and freeing. This hope can help lift one out of a negative trance, even if the glimmer of light is ever so small. The therapy process can often plant the seeds of solutions, expand one’s world, and define more clearly one’s belief system. In the long run therapy can help clients transcend their issues and help them realistically feel more confident to engage once again in their life with friends, family, co-workers and others.
This hope can often spring from the creative encounter between Client and Therapist. It is through their interaction that healing can occur. This enabling experience can often help the client engage in other meaningful conversations with those outside the therapy room. This experience can nurture the bonds of friendship, family living, and life in the community. In the end therapy can help a person become more self-aware, selfconnected, and be ok to engage in life with a deeper sense of joy for themselves and life itself. Therapy can help a person find their sea legs in rough waters. It can help make life worth living in the midst of great stress, painful suffering, and struggles. Therapy can be a safe and secure way to open space for life getting better. Therapy can be worthwhile!
